In 2017, Marcel was nominated for an Academy Award® in the Best Documentary Short Subject category for Watani: My Homeland at the 89th Academy Awards. He also won three EMMY Awards and two BAFTA, among other recognition. His films on the Syrian civil war such as Syria: Children on the Frontline (2014), Children on the Frontline: The Escape(2016) and Watani: My Homeland (2016) have earned him critical appraisal and recognition. Since 2011, Mettelsiefen has been covering the Arab Spring and began reporting from within Syria in April 2011. Since then he has filmed and photographed within Syria more than twenty-five times. It was in Syria that he began documentary film-making. His documentaries from Syria have been aired on ARD, ZDF, Channel4, CNN, Al Jazeera and Canal+, ARTE and others
Camilo was born in Colombia and has dedicated his life to documentary film for more than 10 years. He has worked as a producer on documentary projects such as the series Dining With the Enemy in Colombia for TV2 in Norway and TV5 in Canada, the film Watani by director Marcel Mettelsiefen, nominated for an Oscar in the category of Best Short Documentary in 2017, the series documentary Druglords in Colombia for Netflix among others. In 2016 he also co-produced the film City of Ghosts by renowned Oscar-nominated director Matthew Heineman (Cartel Land) which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2017. In 2014 Juan Camilo founded and directed the Ambulante documentary film festival in Colombia which seeks promote documentary film as a tool for social and cultural transformation.
